Assignment 1: WHO YOU ARE MATTERS
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I moved to the Bay Area for high school and came back to LA for university. So I was very fortunate to grow up in a multicultural city like Los Angeles and to also develop in a small town like Portola Valley. I am graduating this semester and foresee myself working in a financial institution. A goal of mine is to get my Captain's license in the near future, depending on how fast I can collect my sea hours. I would also like to travel to Latin American and Eastern European countries to further my language development skills and cultural knowledge. All of these goals require time and dedication, and that's what I plan on doing. Even after graduation, I plan on attending language and sailing school, all in efforts to get closer to my goals. I am similar to my parents in that we are constantly planning for the future and looking/ preparing for potential obstacles and noting how we can overcome them. I am unlike my parents in that they possess a wealth of knowledge and wisdom about life that I can only hope to acquire one day. I operate under a combination of expectations, some are self-developed and others are given to me by people and institutions that I love and trust. As of now, I believe this setup has worked for me and it can always be changed in the future. I would say Saint King Stephen of Hungary is a role model of mine. He was a very charitable and just ruler of Hungary who built a lot of the political and economic foundations for the country. I try to mimic his charitable actions and leadership abilities. A wild animal I feel like I have a special connection with is a penguin. I have always liked them since I was a kid and have admired their community/ family orientated way of life and they just look like awesome creatures. I like how a male penguin gives a rock/ pebble to a female penguin when he is trying to court her, it's a small, yet beautiful gesture. A significant childhood encounter with a tree would be the times when me and my siblings would climb the trees in our nearby parks. We would race to see who can get higher and enjoy the view from the branches. We would never make it high on the tree, but the effort and journey was what made it fun.

HI Genaro. You seem to have had a very rich life. It is cool how you view the historical figure Saint King Stephen of Hungary as a role-model. His leadership qualities are something to aspire to. Penguins are communal and sweet animals. I appreciate the gesture by the penguin you described.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you mentioned that your parents possess a wealth of knowledge and wisdom about life. It made me think of how amazing all parents really are, and how they know so much because they experienced more life than us. I hope to acquire this knowledge, too, as I experience more life in the future.
ReplyDeleteYou being a sailor is so cool to me, I don’t know anyone else who does that in real life. Also we both have cancer and virgo in our birth chart!
ReplyDeleteI think it's so cool that you sail! I also grew up sailing and I can understand how it can make a huge impact on you. I literally wrote my college essay on a sailing trip I did from Massachusetts to Maine.
ReplyDeleteI love the connection you feel with penguins. Their family-oriented nature and the symbolism of the pebble gesture is such a meaningful reflection of how you value relationships and small, thoughtful actions. Also, the childhood memory of racing to climb trees with your siblings is very relatable to my childhood too!
